Plasma is the fluid part of blood. Plasma contains protein, salts and clotting factors. Burn, trauma, organ transplant and plasma exchange patients benefit from plasma transfusions. After a donation, plasma can be stored frozen for up to one year.
An automated plasma pheresis donation uses specially-designed equipment that separates plasma from blood and then returns the rest of the blood to the donor. The actual procedure takes about one hour, but the entire donation process generally lasts an hour and a half from start to finish.
Plasma donor requirements:
Donors may give plasma every 28 days.
