Kentucky
Blood Center offers on-the-job training for all of our positions. Depending
on what job you're hired to perform, you will receive job-appropriate
training from our staff of certified trainers. In certain departments,
if you terminate your employment within one year of being trained, you
will be required to repay KBC for a portion of your training. Phlebotomist
Individuals applying for phlebotomist positions must complete
a two-week training session as a Medical Screener prior to phlebotomy
training. Medical Screening Training will cover regulations and standards
pertaining to whole blood donation. Once trained, individuals will work
as Medical Screeners for a period of time, to be determined by Area
Managers, before being enrolled in phlebotomy training. Processing
Processing Laboratory staff are trained to provide complete testing
of donor units for all FDA-mandated testing. This includes ABO/Rh, CMV,
syphilis, antibody screens, HIV-1/2, Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis
B core antibody, Hepatitis C, HTLV-I/II. NAT testing is also performed
for HCV, HIV and WNV on donor units. Processing Laboratory staff are
also trained to provide antigen negative units to our service hospitals
for their patients. Components The components laboratory manufactures blood components from whole blood. From one unit of blood, many components can be made. Red blood cells, platelets and fresh frozen plasma are made from one unit, or red cells, cryoprecipitate and recovered plasma can be made from another unit. All training will be provided by a trainer on either the 1st or 2nd shift. This on-the-job training takes approximately 6 to 8 weeks. The employee will have a competency evaluation after each training seesion and again after 6 months and then annually. Hospital
Services
A fully trained Hospital Services employee will recognize the
various products provided by Kentucky Blood Center and be familiar with
the different blood groups.
